A Spa
town since Roman times, Buxton has many attractive features, notably the
famous Georgian Crescent, the recently restored Edwardian Opera House
designed by Frank Matcham, the Parkland and Conservatory of the Pavilion
Gardens, the warm Spa water swimming pool, not to mention Golf Courses.
See links below. The many beauty spots of the Peak District National Park
lie within a few minutes drive and the countryside is tremendously varied,
including large expanses of heather moorland, green wooded dales, caves
and spectacular underground caverns.
Stately Homes abound in this beautiful part of the world; notable Chatsworth
House, Haddon Hall and Lyme Hall. Nature trails provide opportunities
for trekking, cycling and walking. There are numerous shows, fairs and
festivals in and around Buxton including the Wells Dressing (a charming
Derbyshire custom), the Buxton International Music Festival, the International
Gilbert & Sullivan Festival, Jazz Festivals, Antique and Collectibles
fairs and Craft fairs. Alton Towers Theme Park and Gardens are within
an hours drive.
Lakenham is the ideal base for exploring the many and varied attractions
of the Peak District and surrounding areas.
